Abbott presenting Songs of the Season

Songs of the Season is the title of an organ recital to be presented Friday, Dec. 16 at 6:30 p.m. at Shreve Presbyterian Church. Playing the church’s 1915 Schantz organ for the recital will be Rebecca Abbott, music instructor and organist at Mount Vernon Nazarene University and music director for Kenyon College’s cabaret. She also serves as dean of the American Guild of Organists, Columbus chapter.

Abbott holds a Bachelor of Music from Wheaton College with studies in voice, organ and English literature; a Master of Arts in Liturgy and the Arts from the Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary with additional studies in sacred music with Carl Daw and Julian Wachner at Boston University; and a Doctor of Worship Studies from the Institute for Worship Studies. She also is certified in Musikgarten, a childhood music education and movement program for children birth to age 9.

Her areas of studies include the integration of music and text in congregational song, the Oxford/Cambridge movements of the 1800s, and theological aesthetics. Her “Royal Requiem” was recorded by the Mount Vernon Nazarene University Goliards in 2017.

Abbott is an active performer, guest lecturer and hymn writer.

A freewill offering will be received at the recital, and refreshments will be served. The church is located at 343 N. Market St. in Shreve.
