Minerva UMC receives COVID-19 grant for pantry

Minerva United Methodist Church recently received a $500 grant from the United Methodist Appalachian Ministry Network through its COVID-19 emergency grant program.

The UMAMN emergency program was designed to address the increased need seen by food banks and hunger relief programs due to the coronavirus pandemic. In Minerva, food distribution programs saw a 260 percent increase in households needing assistance during the months of March-May.

The funds were used to purchase food for MUMC’s monthly distribution, held the third Thursday of each month, and also to support the Minerva Local School District Weekend Backpack Program.

UMAMN’s mission is to advocate for Appalachia within the structure of the United Methodist Church, working to identify and implement solutions that address the systemic causes of community and environmental issues in Appalachia through leadership development and collaboration with ministries and organizations that serve the region.
