The Fraternal Order of Police Tuscora Lodge #4 is sponsoring the Christmas with a Cop event. This is the 12th year this program has been offered for area children.

“Our goal, as it always has been, is to do everything possible to make Christmas brighter for area children and families,” said Robert Everett, FOP Tuscora Lodge #4 president. “Normally, the costs associated with this program exceed $5,500, which sometimes varies, depending on the number of recipients or how much we allocate to each child. We realize this has been another stressful year for businesses and our residents, but we cannot allow this pandemic to ruin Christmas for our local children.”

The FOP asks for continued support of this program. Officer Chad Dorsey from the New Philadelphia Police Department will chair the event.

The selection of recipients for this program is by need. This process involves teachers from area schools in Tuscarawas County assisting with the selection of recipients, based on personal knowledge.

“We have found teachers to be an invaluable resource, mainly because the teachers know their students better than our members do,” Everett said. “Once the children are selected, phone calls are made to the parents, and a list of needs and desires is obtained from the parents. The unique component of this program is each child in the family, not just the child selected, is a recipient of the program. Last year we gave each family a gift card from an area grocery store to help defray the costs of food for the Christmas season.

“Last year we had a caravan of marked police cruisers deliver gifts to the homes of the recipients. We found this to be so well received we felt it was appropriate to do it again this year. To fund this program, we need financial support from our business community and residents. We are seeking donations for this program by sending out a mailing and by asking the local media to assist us.”

FOP is thankful for community support and support of law enforcement. Over the next few weeks, many businesses and citizens may receive a letter from Tuscora Lodge #4 asking for a donation. Donations can be sent to FOP Tuscora Lodge #4, P.O. Box 2, Dover, OH 44622-0002. People also can stop by a local police department and drop off a donation.
