The 2021 Veterans Day service, honoring all veterans of the Unites States Armed Forces, will be held on Veterans Day, Thursday, Nov. 11, beginning at 11 a.m. on Court House Square in downtown New Philadelphia.

The New Philadelphia VFW Post 1445 post chaplain will discuss what makes a veteran.

The New Philadelphia High School Marching Quaker Band, under the direction of Jeff Furbay, will present the national anthem.

New Philadelphia Welty Middle School students under the direction of Sharon Ricklic will perform the traditional flag-folding ceremony.

Students of the New Philadelphia High School Delphian Chorale, under the direction of Kristi Prucha, will perform patriotic songs.

Welty Middle School choir, under the direction of Cheryl Graham, will sing three patriotic songs.

The rifle squad, composed of volunteers from New Philadelphia’s four veterans service organizations — American Legion Post 139, AMVET’s Post 1338, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1445 and Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 857 — will fire three rifle volleys.

The Marching Quakers will perform taps. Volleys and taps will be rendered in honor of all the members of the United States Armed Forces who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the defense of the nation and to all those who currently protect the gates of freedom.

The three rifle volleys signify a service member’s devotion to duty, honor and country. Taps, while composed of just 24 notes, have come to signify all the sacrifices and hardships made and endured by all of America’s men and women in uniform, past and present.
