Hershel R. Barefield, age 86 of Canton, slept away peacefully on Thursday, Sept. 16, 2021, at The Landing of Canton.

He was born on Nov. 8, 1934, in Preston, Miss., to the late Ross and Addie Ruth Barefield. He served in the U.S. Army, stationed two years in Germany. Hershel was retired from Teledyne Monarch Rubber in Hartville after 33 years of service. He was employed by Portage Electric in North Canton. He was a self-employed plumber and handyman who loved helping others and putting smiles on their faces. His red Ford pickup and John Deere were his pride and joy. Hershel was a member of Little Flower Catholic Parish.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Frances (Bossart) Barefield, and his loving Yorkie, Mr. Cooper, whom he dearly loved. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by sisters, Bobbie (Ray) Watson and Maggie (Pete) Hutnik; brothers, Ross (Tootsie) Barefield, and Calvin Barefield; numerous other family members, neighbors, and friends whom he truly loved and cherished.

Many thanks to all the employees at The Landing of Canton and In Care Ohio Hospice staff. All their love and care was phenomenal.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, Sept. 28, at 11 a.m. at Little Flower Catholic Parish with The Very Reverend Canon Christopher Henyk and very special nephew, Fr. Richard Watson concelebrating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Massillon. Friends and family may call one hour prior to the mass, 10- 11 a.m., at the church. Everyone is attendance is requested to wear a face covering.

Donations may be made in his memory to Little Flower Catholic Church, intended for their youth activities at 2040 Diamond St. NE, Canton, OH 44721. Services entrusted to the Mark R. Vrabel Funeral Home, North Canton, 330-452-4041.
