Lady Hornets knocked out of tournament

MALVERN – The girls basketball season has come to an end for the Malvern Lady Hornets with a 53-42 loss to the River Pilots.

The game remained close in the first quarter, tied 9-9 at the end.

River pulled away in the second quarter, outscoring Malvern 15-7 to take a 26-14 lead into halftime.

River opened the second half with a strong performance, extending their lead to as much as 21 points, leading 43-22 entering the final quarter of action as they held onto an 11-point victory.

Malvern sophomore Maddie Powers finished as the team’s leading scorer with 17 points.

Lanie Bower scored 14 points for Malvern, including four three pointers. Although the junior didn’t win the game, she etched her name into the record books at Malvern. She broke Tara Tucci’s record for career three pointers (91) as she moved into first place with 93. Bower has all of next season to add to her own career record.

Raine Coblentz scored five points. Marella Smith, Alyiah Watson and Alana Spurrier added two points each.

The Lady Hornets finished the season with a 12-11 record and posted a 7-5 Inter-Valley Conference (IVC) record.
