Editor’s note: Letters concerning races and/or issues on the Nov. 2 ballot will no longer be accepted.

Letter to the Editor,

In my 42 years as an educator I have come to realize the importance of a good school board member. Members of a school board are elected by residents of the community they serve. As such, they have a responsibility to represent their constituents by doing their research and engaging in dialogue with community members, their teachers and the students and their families. The compass of their judgment should always point to making decisions that are in the best interest of students. “Doing what’s best for kids” is a phrase that is used by many in education but is not always reflected in their actions. The only way to follow through with decision-making that benefits students is to seek the input of the teachers who spend every day with students in the classroom and all other school activities sponsored by the district. Board members bring their diverse professional expertise to the table in establishing all manner of policies in the operation of the district, but this important component of teacher and student input must never be overlooked.

I will be voting for Jody Starcher on Nov. 2. I’ve known Jody for many years. It was my pleasure to have had her as a student in my Human Anatomy and Physiology class at WHS. I have enjoyed watching her success in her professional life, most recently as the Director of Customer Supply Chain Initiatives at The J.M. Smucker Co. Her organization and people skills no doubt contribute to her success on a daily basis. Jody is a good listener and seeks the input of all those involved. She also rolls up both sleeves and digs in to problem-solving and finding solutions.

Electing a school board member has nothing to do with politics. A candidate should be evaluated by their character, honesty, work ethic and dedication to the task of providing the best possible environment for the children of their community. I am confident that Jody Starcher has those qualities and will be an excellent addition to our school board.
